200 Years of History: Creating a Timeline

by Ruth Bamberger and Suzann Parker Leist, Co-creators, Christ Church Cathedral Bicentennial Timeline

In June of 2016, we began the process of researching the two hundred years of history of Christ Church that now appear on seventy feet of wall space in our church’s north corridor. We organized our research around four themes: (1) the Episcopal Church and our worship; (2) our membership community; (3) our ministries and whom we serve; and (4) our integration into the life of a growing city on the Ohio River. The text, photos, and design of the primary timeline trace this evolution across nine panels.

A two-part secondary timeline provides context for our story. Economic and political events, social change, and advances in knowledge in each period have influenced our congregation and our mission in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region.

Creating a timeline has demanded hours of reading, research, and meeting with local history experts. Dennis Harrell, cathedral archivist, and long-time cathedral members reviewed our content at key checkpoints. The finished product, we believe, captures the critical points and milestones of our church history and the world in which we thrive.

We are pleased to be able to present the physical timeline here in an electronic form for your further study and pleasure.

In an age where history is captured in bits of text and images, a timeline format enables our community and visitors to our church to experience our rich history and tradition. May we together be inspired to carry our vision forward into the twenty-first century.
