A Look at Two Creative and Effective Programs for Teens At-Risk:

Holistically Empowering All Teens (HEAT)
The teen years are a critical time in a young person’s development, and a number of factors also put many teens at-risk in today’s urban culture. At this Community Issues Forum, Tara Robinson, program leader for Holistically Empowering All Teens (HEAT), and Tom Kent, managing director of Elementz, describe two programs that are succeeding in involving teens in activities that are keeping them on track for positive and productive lives.
Elementz began in 2001 as a program in Over-the-Rhine aimed at getting young people off the streets. It has become a thriving arts center that inspires through music. poetry, and art the talents and potentials of hundreds of inner-city youth. Not only does Elementz provide teens with a creative outlet through classes and lessons, but its dancers and musicians perform at many public events.
HEAT was launched in 2016 in response to the large number of teens caught up in the heroin epidemic. As a teen-centered program, HEAT develops teen leaders in schools throughout Greater Cincinnati. It then operates an on-line platform where teens tell their stories and raise awareness about the risks of substance abuse. After school workshops also focus on developing positive life skills.
Community Issues Forums are held September through May, generally on a bi-weekly basis. They are free and open to all. Learn more.
