October 13 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Each year, since 2010, the Native American Ministry Council of Christ Church Cathedral has celebrated the gifts of, as well as recognized the concerns of, Native Americans with workshops and a special worship service on the weekend before Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which falls on the second Monday of October.
At today’s service, the Rev. Leon Sampson (Navajo) is preaching. A graduate of the Virginia Theological Seminary, Father Sampson currently serves at Good Shepherd Episcopal Mission in Ft. Defiance in Arizona, in Navajoland. Previously, he served at St Christopher’s Episcopal Mission in Bluff, Utah, in Navajland.
Guy Jones and Sonny Hensley of the Miami Valley Council for Native Americans will also be active participants in the service.
Mark Banks and the Southern Singers Drum Group and flutist Janice Trytten are contributing to the service music. The Cathedral Choir is presenting a special anthem, the text of which is based on North American Indian mythology.
