Out of the Shadows Exhibit
On Exhibit in Gallery South through December 17
We are pleased to present in Gallery South a collection of art offering a rarely seen perspective on the role of women in the early Christian church. The “Out of the Shadows” exhibit features photographs of frescoes, sarcophagi, and mosaics from Rome that portray women playing active leadership roles in the first few centuries of Christian history. Women are depicted in prayer and prophecy, as disciples and teachers, breaking bread in ritual meals, and taking on other high-profile roles previously thought to be reserved for men alone. One piece even depicts a woman named as “episcopa”—bishop.
The exhibit was curated by Dr. Anna Miller, the director of the Institute for Spirituality and Social Justice at Xavier University.
This is only the second time that this collection has been displayed in the United States.
