The Sacraments

Sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, as explained in our Book of Common Prayer. They help us to be a sacramental people, who continually see the work of God always at hand around us.

Besides sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion), The Episcopal Church recognizes other spiritual markers in our journeys of faith. These include:

  • Confirmation, an adult affirmation of baptismal vows, which were often made as an infant.
  • Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession)
  • Sacrament of Matrimony
  • Sacrament of Orders (ordination to diaconate or priesthood)
  • Ministration to the Sick and Laying on of Hands and Anointing.
